Welcome to the Hospice and Palliative Care (HPM) Fellowship Program at Broward Health North. This one-year program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and is housed within the Department of Internal Medicine. The HPM Fellowship Program at Broward Health North consists of comprehensive training in all aspects of palliative care, with the approach of teaching both primary and specialty palliative care, as well providing a solid background in management of patients requiring hospice services. Fellows will work in a community with a diversity of cases across age groups, diagnoses and socio-economic status, delivering culturally sensitive care. Fellows will complete their clinical rotations primarily at Broward Health North, with select rotations at Broward Health Medical Center, Broward Health Rehabilitation Center, Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital and with VITAS for inpatient hospice and community hospice.

Our fellowship welcomes a variety of specialty backgrounds including anesthesiology, emergency medicine, critical care, family medicine, geriatrics, gynecology-oncology, hematology-oncology, internal medicine, neurology, pediatrics and surgery. We also welcome fellows from various stages of their clinical careers and hope to meet the needs of the adult learner.

The goal of the fellowship is to prepare fellows to be successful in their career goals in clinical care, education, research. We believe that the fellow should be part of directing their learning and work to help them achieve their learning goals. The fellowship offers a curriculum taught by faculty from many disciplines and expertise, with core lectures that cover the fundamentals of palliative care, specialty palliative care, medical ethics, global health and psychosocial care.

Our fellows will be encouraged to identify a scholarly activity that interests them early in their year and will have a mentor to guide them to be successful in their projects. They will participate in global health projects, with opportunities to engage with the Palliative Care global health community. Part of their curriculum will include dedicated and required time for Humanities in Palliative Care. They will have protected time each month to explore different means of creative expression, including Narrative Medicine, Art and Music Therapy.

Program Aims:

Broward Health North’s Palliative Care Fellowship Program is committed to providing a comprehensive and evidence-based training in Hospice and Palliative Care that allows our fellows to attain the knowledge, skills, and philosophy of care required to become competent, confident and autonomous HPM specialist who adhere to the highest professional and ethical standards of medicine. Our fellows are trained to deliver compassionate, patient-centered care to a socio-economically and culturally diverse patient population with coordination of care within and across health delivery systems. The program aims to prepare trainees to be independent, resourceful and competent in clinical practice. Knowing that our graduates have various careers options in clinical, educational, community-based care, and academic centers, we strive to prepare them to be successful in their endeavors. They will gain experience working within and directing an interdisciplinary team, including physicians, nurse practitioners, social workers, nurses, pharmacists, and a chaplain.

• Comprehensive, intentional training program in the fundamental of palliative care, including pain and symptom management of patients with serious illnesses
• Diagnosis and treatment of the psychosocial elements of cancer and other serious and complex illnesses
• Cultural, spiritual, religious, and existential aspects of palliative medicine
• Care of imminently dying patients, including management of terminal symptoms and bereavement/grief
• Hospice eligibility, history and philosophy of care, and delivery of hospice care
• Pediatrics in Palliative Care- Age-appropriate communication, pediatric diseases and symptom management
• Holistic approaches to care of the seriously ill
• Clinical research methods for palliative care investigation critical with review and application of the relevant scientific literature
• Board Review, Journal Club, Ethics, Case Conferences, Interdisciplinary Team Meetings and Grand Round
• Intensives in communication, with workshops, meaningful feedback and opportunities to teach communication to medical students and residents
• Electives to meet career goals: Elective 1- to choose from specialty Palliative Care such as Hematology/Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Cardiology, Nephrology, Pulmonary, Critical Care, Psychiatry, among others. Elective 2- to choose from Ethics, Spiritual care with Chaplaincy Care, Psychosocial care with psychologist/social worker, Global Health, Narrative Medicine, Research, Hospice administration, among others.
