The first year of training is spent with Internal Medicine learning the basics of caring for patients. Six blocks are spent in the Boward Health North inpatient wards. One block each is spent in emergency medicine and the medical intensive care unit. Two blocks are spent in neurology rotations in the stroke service., along with one in neurosurgery, and one in outpatient neurology.
PGY-2
The first year of Neurology is weighted toward teaching the resident patient care responsibilities. The resident learns how to perfect their neurological exam. Eight inpatient blocks are spent on the ward service, epilepsy monitoring unit, and continuity clinic at Broward Health North, where the radiology and behavioral neurology blocks are also held. The pediatric neurology block is completed at Broward Health Medical Center. A block conducted at The Neurology Institute is where residents will study EEG and epilepsy. One block is made available for residents to pursue training in areas of interest through elective rotations.
PGY-3
The second year of neurology training continues to refine the resident’s abilities in patient care and educates the resident about the specialized skills required of a neurologist. Residents spend 8 blocks on the inpatient consultation and stroke services at Broward Health North, as well as 2 weeks each focusing on neuro-rehabilitation, epilepsy, electromyography, and neuro-ophthalmology. One block will be held at Broward Health Medical Center for pediatric neurology, with a block reserved for residents to pursue training in areas of interest through elective rotations.
